His announcement last week doesn't make a difference to his reputation as a musician, though. First of all, he hasn't released an English album in so many years, he's pretty much off the music scene here in America. Secondly, when he was at his most popular point in the U.S., people already assumed he was gay based on his dress, his dancing, his performances and other characteristics. Thirdly, in today's day and age when so many people are gay, it's not unusual for a musician or other celebrity to be gay. Their sexual orientation doesn't help them sell more albums and fans should pay less attention to it than they actually do.

Ricky comes out the closet!!!
Ricky Martin came out of the closet last week by posting a comment on his website www.rickymartinmusic.com. This seems like a less direct way of making this official announcement (which shouldn't have been a surprise to anyone) than other gay celebrities like Ellen DeGeneres and Adam Lambert who sold their stories to magazines. Ricky Martin's action was probably his way of taking charge of managing his personal information rather than trying to dodge the paparazzi and letting the tabloids break his story. This will probably be the method more and more celebrities will use to reveal their bombshell announcements like marriages, divorces, affairs, or visits to rehab. In our age of instant data, if celebrities want to manage their careers they'll find more outlets to reach their fans instantly through websites, Twitter, Facebook, blogs, etc...

Maybe the issue is the public's need to know sexual orientation? Why are we still so concerned with who is/isn't? I think it point to an underlying homophobia in the country, or at least something perpetuated by the media and moralist designed to divide people.
ReplyDeleteto POPROCKPOLITICS I agree with you. I think people should really get over it. I could care less how gay he is. I don't like Ricky Martin because I don't like his music. This was before I knew he was gay. Elton John is gay and his music is awesome and he is a true artist. I think when we get back to having true artist on the radio and in our CD players and ipods then all the other stuff doesn't matter. People are so obsessed with the life and back story of these people because there music is just so so. Whitney Houston was on crack and in an unhealthy relationship and nobody cared because Whitney got it. American and the media just needs to grow up!
ReplyDeleteYes, why does our culture focus so much on the personal lives of musicians and actresses? When did we as a culture start focusing so much on the lives and drama rather than the music?
ReplyDeleteI agree with Brianna, it's like people are covering celebrties personal lifes the same way people follow sports. It's crazy our society is so fascinated with who is hooking up with who. It's sad.
